What if a lost soul chooses not to believe in the Saviour, Jesus Christ? According to God’s Word, he will perish in hell.
 
Perishing in hell doesn’t mean that he would become nothingness or no longer exist; but rather, he will be suffering in a place of torment for all eternity with full consciousness. There is no horror in the entire universe that is as terrifying as this.
 
If that is so, escaping from hell should be everyone’s top priority in life. This earthly life will not last forever, in fact, it is too brief; but the next one, whether in Heaven or hell, will be unending.
 
This subject is so disturbing that most people would rather not think about it. However, ignoring it doesn’t make hell null and void. In fact, hell is enlarging itself with more souls in the wait with each passing day. However, God has made a way for us to escape it.
 
There are two final destinations at the end of our earthly life – Heaven or hell. The former is a place of eternal bliss and the latter a place of unimaginable pain and torment that goes on forever. These two places are in stark contrast to each other.
 
Most people have not heard the biblical truth about the nature and spiritual condition of man; and even for those who have, they find it incredulous. The Bible clearly teaches that every person has a sinful nature since birth because of Adam’s Fall. Hence, before one comes to Christ for salvation, he belongs to Satan and is subtly controlled by him. His endgame is to hold each soul in sin so that he can bring him to his eternal fate in hell.
 
Psalm 51:5
Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, And in sin my mother conceived me.
 
Ephesians 2:2
in which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience,
 
2 Corinthians 4:3-4
But even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing, whose minds the god of this age has blinded, who do not believe, lest the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine on them.
 
The Lord spoke about a rich man who lived unto himself; it was as if God didn’t exist. So he was living a self-centered life with no concern for the needy whom he could have easily helped.
 
A sickly beggar, Lazarus, full of sores, was lying outside his gates. Daily, as the rich man passed by him, it was as though Lazarus wasn’t there. The rich, callous man chose not to notice Lazarus’ plight.
 
As he continued with his godless, self-indulgent living, Lazarus passed away and his corpse was removed from the gates of the rich man. But Lazarus’ soul and spirit (the real person) was taken to Heaven where no evil, sickness or suffering exists.
 
Lazarus meant nothing to that wealthy man until the latter also died. To his horror he found himself in hell where there is no feasting, not even a drop of water. Tormented by hell’s fire, he yearned for just a drop of water. Even that was denied. I’m sure he remembered that he could have easily offered Lazarus some scraps of food and water, but he didn’t even bother to glance at the beggar.
 
Lazarus’ suffering had ended but the godless man’s agony had just begun. The big difference is that Lazarus’ suffering was limited to his remaining years on earth while the torment of the rich man goes on even till today and forever.
 
He is still yearning for that drop of water that he begged for 2,000 years ago and is still being denied (Luke 16:19-31). How terrifying is that?
 
The Lord Jesus warns that the road to hell is a broad one — It is popular, commonly accepted, and many blindly follow this route because it is free, easy, and the unrestrained pleasure are forthcoming. Like that rich man, many are merrily dancing along the broad way towards eternal torment.
 
But here is the good news. The Son of God, Jesus Christ, had already paid the ultimate price to redeem us from the grips of Satan and wash us from all sin.
 
All you need to do is to come just as you are, believe and repent of your sins; then receive Jesus as your Saviour and Lord. Next for the rest of your life, follow His teachings in the Bible and your final destination will be Heaven.
 
The truth is that any unbeliever, who is a child of the devil, can become a child of God by believing and trusting Christ.
 
Ephesians 1:7
In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace
 
Romans 10:9-10
that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
 
Here is a word of encouragement for Christians who are struggling with persistent sin and are beginning to doubt their salvation. This struggle is not abnormal. Nobody can live a perfectly sinless life.
 
The godliest saint of God has his own weaknesses. He has to constantly come to the Lord for forgiveness and cleansing, according to 1 John 1:9. Yet no believer can remember and confess thoroughly every sin.
 
As long as we continue to keep faith with Christ, His grace will make up for the shortfall. Often, He would prompt us to deal with an overlooked sin.
 
A Christian who is struggling with a besetting sin is still under the Blood of Christ. Keep praying and don’t give up. As long as you do not abandon your relationship with God, you are still a child of God.
 
Even if you walk out on God, He waits for you to return. The Parable of The Prodigal Son clearly demonstrates that.
 
After spurning the father’s love and squandering his inheritance, the prodigal returned home out of sheer necessity, yet his father received and reinstated him as his precious son unconditionally.
 
Therefore, believers should be assured of their salvation and eternal well-being. God’s grace and mercy ensure us a place in Heaven so long as we stay in relationship with Him.
